As I grow older, my only regret is that I never mastered any local Filipino dances. In other parts of the world, indigenous dances are more than entertainment. They are intangible expressions of a nation’s history and culture, from the dance steps themselves to the colorful costumes. I was aghast when I first saw the Japanese Noh, with the chants, instruments, elaborate garments and wooden masks. Peking Theater dance is another Asian favorite. While the traditional dance of the Irish in tune with the violine music gives me a strong urge to jump around.
